About Juma Santos AyantolaBaba Juma Santos Ayantolawas born James Reginald Riley on December 27, 1947 in the State of Massachusetts. He passed from this world September 10, 2007 while in Chicago, Illinois, working with the Art Ensemble of Chicago / AACM Workshop. Our Memorial Celebration on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery in New York City was dedicated to our dear friend, collegue, and/or teacher ;world-renowned African-Caribbean-Latin and Jazz multi percussionist. JUMA was an educator and influential developer and composer in the contemporary African American music profession. Many came to the event, many spoke and many performed, most of which is available here on this podcast, a small testament to the impact he had on people around the world, here in New York, in Chicago, in Detroit, in Ghana & beyond. An incomplete list of participants would include organizers Thom Corn, On Ka'a Davis and patrick brennan along with well as Rachid Parker, Cooper-Moore, Juma Sultan, Hassan Bakr, Michaeal Markus, Bern Nix, Lisle Ellis, Dixie Estes, David Pleasant, Ras Moshe, Jay Milder, Sister Sakia, Rachiim Ausar-Sahu, Hakim Jami, Jim French / Tambie Antell, Enrique Rosa, Juini Booth, Iya Oluntunji, Goussy Celestin, Dawn Drake, James Zollar, Ron McBee, Brian Smith and Sabir Mateen. JUMA SANTOS was one of the legendary originators of the Pan-African drumming movement during the 1960s and 70s in America! JUMA was the Cat who played his drums and led drumming circles at Civil Rights Marches, Peace Rallies and Love Ins. His musical career of 40 years spanned the genres of African Dance and Religious Ceremony, including the Rites of Passage; Rock and Roll, Salsa, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Fusion, Avant-Garde and World Music. His distinctive SOUND and PLAYING TECHNIQUE places him among the trendsetters of STYLE ON THE CONGA DRUMS Downbeat magazine credited him with bringing AFRICAN SENSIBILITIES of RHYTHM and ACOUSTIC SOUND instruments into POST-MODERN pop music- fusing AFRICAN, CUBAN, PUERTO RICAN and BRAZILIAN folklore rhythms with FUNK and JAZZ; In 2002 he was invited to facilitate and present lectures at the National Summer Institute, hosted by the Rock and Roll Museum and Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio; IN 1967 JUMA began his extensive travels in North and South America, Europe the Caribbean and the Middle East studying the many stylistic traditions of sacred and secular music and musical instruments, rhythms, songs, chants and dances radiating from Africa to the Americas;In Africa, where he visited over 20 countries, JUMA was Artist in Residence in the Masters in African Music Program (1973-1975) at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, West Africa under the auspice of ethnomusicologist and scholar Dr.Kwabena J.H. Nketia. In Cuba he took part in an intensive program focusing on the folkloric music of Cuba through the Caribbean Music and Dance Program at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Santiago and Havana, Cuba, 1996-1998. In 2003 he became a lecturer in the Music Department, School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, Legon. In 2005 JUMA acted as program consultant for the U.S. Embassy Accra, Ghana for the African American Heritage Month events of that year; A MASTER DRUMMER, DANCE ACCOMPANIST, and ENSEMBLE LEADER, his credits include over 75 records / CDs and performance dates with artists such as Miles Davis, Alvin Ailey, Babatunde Olatunji, Nina Simone, Marion Brown, The Fabulous Rhinestones, Taj Mahal and the International Band, Roy Ayres, The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Tom Jones, Julius Hemphill, Ester Satterfield, Trini Lopez, Wendell Harrison, Roger Blank, Don Alias, Don Moye and Jack DeJohnette; JUMA will be loved and fondly remembered by all that knew him;JUMA was spirit and that Spirit is honored here today; AXE ASE;PAX PEACE Special thanks to: Carol Blank, Dr Floyd Darden, Stefan Eins, Luther Thomas Shahid J.Esspirit, Maxine Gordon, Ron Huckaby, Ted Lawton, Joe Lewis II, Charles Mingus III, Ghasem, Oma Misha Turner and Nat Wood.
